This development for Network Tasman questions how Commercial Buildings with Zero Carbon aspirations can be placed on semirural sites. Our Design response is a simple, horizonal form, protected by broad eaves on three sides. Raised to capture views, glazing and extensive timber cladding is contained between horizontal bands at roof and floor levels. Timber pods, containing internal meeting space, and decked elements moderate building form, providing outdoor area that extend and connect to the wider site. The office building typology is generally vertical, in the city. This site offers a new opportunity through its horizontality and landscape connection. Within, the workspace is reconsidered as a horizontal, interconnected landscape. Central, workstations have ready access to the building perimeter with meeting rooms, quiet spaces and furnished breakout areas allowing a variety in work method and approach. The perimeter is naturally lit, ventilated, and extends to decked area, breaking down the traditional enclosed nature of office environments. The workspace is enlivened by considered timber use. Engineered timber portal frames and braces provide moments of detail. Extensive use of modified radiata cladding and lining warm the interior and blur the distinction between internal and external space.
